When I noticed this line in the newer file ## If you want ^F, ^B,

Do you actually use ^F to move one character forward,
and ^B to move one character back? Or do you use the
arrow keys instead? If the latter, then there was no
need to restore the old bindings for ^F/^B.

(And a large majority of nano users don't use the linter
nor the formatter, so rebinding M-B and M-F is not needed
either for most people.)

It seems there were many keyboard changes in an 8 version.

No, there weren't -- just the four keys mentioned above.

What I suspect happened is that you uncommented _all_
'bind' commands in the sample nanorc, also the long list
at the end of that file. But in the comment there, the
"usual" does not mean "the old nano bindings", but "the
bindings that most graphical programs have". Meaning:
do _not_ uncomment those.

Anyway, when upgrading a tool that you use a lot, it is
a good idea to read the NEWS file. It would have told
you all you needed to know.

Out of curiosity, why are you using Debian Sid? When
using such an unstable system, you ought to have the
knowledge (and the backup files) needed to fix things.

To have a backup editor ready for when you mess up nano
again, I would suggest you install the old pico:

    sudo apt install alpine-pico
