Follow-up to my earlier email. 
I tried a few things, this worked: 
 conn = pq_connect (setdbopts ("host", "localhost", "dbname", "rome", "user", 
"username", "password", "secret"));

and pq_exec_params worked for 'select' queries:
pq_exec_params (conn, "select * from rome001;")

It may take a day to two to be sure that it all works, 
but it looks good so far.
