I think dicom package will nt work with all os. Because this package is not
available in repos for all distros. And also it depends Grassroots
DICOM(GDCM)

about dicomread
Loadable Function: image = dicomread ( filename )
Loadable Function: image = dicomread ( structure )
Load the image from a DICOM file. filename is a string (givingthe filename).
structure is a structure with a field Filename (such as returned by
dicominfo ). image may be two or three dimensional, depending on the content
of the file. An integer or float matrix will be returned, the number of bits
will depend on the file.
