you'll need one java library for reading xls files too

when you're running linux, your xls file is a xlsx file and don't contain strings, calculations or empty columns and rows, you can try using this xlsxread function https://github.com/markuman/xlsxread/ it's java free and even faster than matlab - but still very elementary atm.
