Matthew, this bug seems due to WGL (windows integrated GL) interface provided by Xwin http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2013-06/msg00035.html Try running the Xserver with "Xwin -multiwindow -nowgl" it does not make the plot faster but at least the grey effect does not appear when moving the plots.
