I uninstalled them, and then uninstalled the inactive and unused ports, which may have included port used by the old versions of octave. I then installed octave from scratch pretty much as described, and everything worked. I suspect it was updating octave to the right gcc version, but missing the same checks in the other ports. There is a lot of stuff going and coming when updating octave: update ought to work but it is not completely surprising that it gets in a knot sometimes. Flushing it all out takes a bit of time, but you don't have to think. I don't know whether that is worth suggesting in the web page, but it is the only thing I can think I might add. Cheers.
