octave on macintosh (os X)

I am teaching a calculus copurse, using octave. Some of the students
have os X machines, and I do not have access to any such machines for
testing octave. One problem seems to be newer machines Os X 10.8.3,
for instance, or maybe anything newer than Os X 10.5, which seems to
be the lates one for whivh there is available a fink binary.

?What do people do?
