So I simply downloaded the .dmg from the wiki and installed octave using that
without going through the home-brew process.  Is that what is messing me up? 
I am doing the home brew process now, and it is taking a long time (>20
hours).  Is that normal?  I will keep you all posted on the outcome.  Thanks
for the input!
