Thanks! This is definitely better!. However, the x-axis labels are still a bit overlapped in the fig saved.

Try setting the "paperpositionmode" of the figure to "auto":

hf = figure(1);
set(hf, 'paperpositionmode', 'auto');
saveas (hf, 'myplot.png');
