This input line:
@item @code{[[HH:]MM:]SS}
causes texinfo to go nuts and dump lots of incomprehensible stuff
into stderr. I just want the text inside the curly braces to print
as you see it, and if there's something wrong with that syntax then
a corrective hint would be nice, too. Thank you Cheers - Bruce

Oh, and when you happen to be bored, you could eliminate some of those
under/overfull boxes ...
Only if I knew the cause. I must have some boxes, but I don't know what they
are.
It's just .texi text as far as I know.
