Using a macro makes pdfetex quits and exits with bad status

That is surprising.

Could you introspect a working installation that works like this

hagbard@fuckup: ~/Admir/build/texinfo
../../source/texinfo/configure --prefix=/home/hagbard/Admir/bin/texinfo

make

sudo make install

~/Admir/bin/texinfo/bin/texi2pdf 06a-amcoh.texi
