Could we ever learn to share the hardware needed to 'regular'
server-based Free Software to compete with FaceBook?
I can't seem to find any discussion of that difficult step.
My feeling is that there really is no way of doing this, at least in the US and most other jurisdictions, as if you have shared ownership, a search warrant is of physical necessity going to effect people other than yourself; so we have a harder problem than facebook does, that is creating a social networking system that is decentralized but federated, rather than centralized. But people already have some things working, e.g.
identi.ca / simple federated microblogging protocol.
IMHO other than the software to make this work, the other big challenge is to create a system administration model where people running their separate servers never have to do sys admin type stuff if they choose not to.
I have some ideas about how to approach the problem, but don't know if
this is an appropriate forum for such a discussion?
I don't know of a better one.
Even more aggressively I want to talk about how we, the users, can own
and control the entire physical layer to become a Free as in Freedom
ISP and cell-phone services, etc.
For a while TAPR was doing some interesting stuff on Amateur Radio bands, but the wide and cheap availability of mobile phones seems to have killed a lot of that.

Anyone have any ideas or pointers to groups or lists addressing this subject?
I'm interested in the Sys Admin problem, but won't have time to work on it for a while (business is starting with a lower level problem, lack of widely available completely free hardware/software combinations). Software as a Service needs to be replaced by Distributed Servers, Delegatable Administration IMHO.
Don't know if jgay is on the list, he tends to know the deeper org landscape so cc:ing him.
