Fyi this has been a big concern in the ubuntu community. thus a off/on button 
has been added to the privacy panel. but it is on by default :/

the ubuntufr community worked on this issue and proposed a panel to chose 
whether you want it or not at the first use (for each user). I think it is only 
in beta but search for "dash privacy interface" in the dev stuff if you are 
interested.
