We're doing something along these lines in the FLOSS Foundation here in
Poland:
http://e-swoi.pl/
Apologies, we do not have an English version (yet).
The idea is to have software in the form of a bootable USB stick (and image,
of course), that kids can take home and boot any computer with, saving their
work to the USB stick itself. A "cloud in your pocket", if you will.
This is accompanied by teaching materials, lesson scenarios, implementation
examples, etc. We're using Scratch, Lazarus and several other programming
tools/environments that we found to be most conducive to sharing knowledge.
We should be able to release all this on libre licenses (GPL, CC-By-SA,
mainly) during the next few months.
