I recently found out about this (2015) project:

Last release was in Nov. 2015 but its discussion group seems fairly
active. Unfortunately most of the beta Android components and the
discussion group all require joining Google resources.
The project basically proposes alternative firmware for an existing ~70
U$ watch, I haven't looked at the above links in detail yet but I
remembered your post and thought I'd share here.
