Hi frank, this is the place to go for help.

Near the bottom of the page in the manuals section there is a link to video tutorials made by Ben Lemon. I suggest taking a look at that because he goes step by step of the installation of LilyPond and frescobaldi, a popular editor for LilyPond.

I followed the instructions and created a copy of the file on the desktop and dragged the file onto the LilyPond icon but no pdf file got created.
