either ways works fine - the point is that the non-expert user won't know
_which_ file to use - and Makefile is not the one they want if they are trying
to use configure.

My ncurses is in a personal directory. As I mentioned, I specified
the -L flags - it just wasn't obvious to me from anything I had read to
date that I would also need to specify the -l flag after having told
configure I wanted ncurses.
Subsequent messages I have posted indicate that additional difficulties are
being encountered.
