lynx checks that the file does not exist, and if it does, shows

        File exists. Overwrite? (y/n)

and when entering n you can enter the desired filename. This is
better than automagically adding random extensions, because only
this way you’ll then know which file is which (and you can over‐
write deliberately; this is something I’m often doing for example).
