RMS doesn't like hyphenated ranges because (legally speaking) one cannot be 
sure whether there were releases in all of the omitted years.  I think by 
implication we cannot expand such a range incase we accidentally name a year 
which didn't have a release...  certainly, I have always resisted the 
temptation to expand ranges when I come across them.

Richard, I'm Cc:ing you in the hope that you can clear this up... I guess 
adding address@hidden (? I'm not sure of the exact alias to reach all of 
the GNU developers) to the distribution list of your reply would be 
worthwhile.
