    RMS doesn't like hyphenated ranges because (legally speaking) one cannot be

Exactly.

If possible, we should find out the correct list of years and replace
the range with a list.  However, if that is not easy to do, we can
leave the range as we found it.  It is no disaster, it merely is not good.
