Ah.  I had thought that m4_pattern_allow had arrived between 2.50 and 2.52.
I'm cool with (i).  configure files can be torturous enough without trying to 
support barely compatible versions of autoconf.  We might as well move to 
configure.ac at the same time...

It will make choosing examples for the autoconf chapter of gnuprog2 easier 
too =)O|
