Yes, this is a known issue AFAIK, that nscd doesn't play well with
nss_mysql.

Not that I've noticed and my boxes have thousands of users on them - I run
several ISPs with lots of users access all kinds of services very
regularly. I've never had a load problem caused by nss_mysql.
A name service cache isn't necessary in my view.
