Once ReWire has been mentionned i thougt about aRTS, the kde sound server.

I've never really used it (only an alpha long ago) but it claims to
currently
provide an api for communicating transparently audio and messages between 
applications.

It's surely a lot nearer (i think it even exceeds ReWire's feature) than
esound is.
(i had the impression esound was mainly a hack and in any case doesn't
seem to 
be the way to go performance wise ;)
