Follow-up Comment #51, bug #50025 (project octave):

I agree that this must be annoying for Mac users.

@Andrew: Can you modify the patch to apply only to Mac users (i.e., protect
your changes with #ifdef).  It will be safer that way since we don't fully
understand the mechanism for why fprintf is required and we shouldn't perturb
existing systems (Linux, Windows) in case it has a malign effect.
