Follow-up Comment #2:

The analysis in comment #1 is correct, although no need to use the Hermitian
transpose versus ordinary transpose for a cell array.  I made that small
change and added a BIST test for this bug report and checked everything in
here: http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/583c0ed2bc8f
