Follow-up Comment #9, bug #66012 (group octave):

@Rik: Your example doesn't have any text label or tick, and latex should thus
not be called here (the print function only switches axes
"ticklabelinterpreter", not text objects "interpreter" contrary to what I said
in comment #6). So this is definitely pointing to something different.
