Michael, Ben,

Thanks for the testing.  It accidentally helped expose a segfault in
Octave.  Try

hax = gca ();
set (hax, 'xlim', [])

I pushed a patch for that to the stable branch here
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/c2206fda3986).
