Thanks for the reply, Philip.

Take your time replying -- it's already months since I told you I'd give
this a go :)

In the test suite, I commented out one which Matlab also fails (a format
like "foo%dfoo" on the string "foofoo" -- Matlab and my code don't treat
this as NaN, since "foo" isn't a delimiter).  I'll check if there were
others that I changed, other than the different error messages, and get your
approval for them.
