Details:
Most modern Linux distributions provide packages for PulseAudio and use it as
a default sound-system (Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE, ...). Even more some
distributions (like Fedora) don't allow users to write to /dev/dsp which is
used by playaudio.
Therefor the attached patch changes touches playaudio.m and adds suport for
PulseAudio using it's paplay utility. But paplay is just choosen if the
classic way ("cat %s > /dev/dsp") fails.
This patch was tested on Fedora.
