I have a different possibly related issue:

[fails during final linking]
/usr/local/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Seek_Stream'
/usr/local/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Get_Short'
/usr/local/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Forget_Frame'
/usr/local/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Access_Frame'
/usr/local/lib/libpangoxft-1.0.so: undefined reference to `FT_Get_Long'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [pan] Error 1

Everything in my old 0.11.9* bins now lack fonts now, EVERYTHING menus, all
panes. I have gone back to 0.11.3 until I can figure this out. I removed all
traces of freetype2 from my system and reinstalled with no luck yet, I'm
thinking of trashing all my gtk and gnome stuff and starting from scratch.
I've spent maybe 6 hour on this problem so far, I'm a bit baffled as to what
the problem is. could freetype 2.1 be the problem?
