Thanks.  That appears to be the problem.  It's described on ximian as an
Evolution bug, but there's mention of reports of other gtk+ apps freezing
too, and the patch makes sense.  (Reading the patch, apparently, focus
goes to the first widget in a dialog by default, and the first widget is
often a label, which isn't designed to take focus, so the app freezes. The
patch checks to see where focus is and forwards it to a widget that can
handle it if it's on a label, so the app won't freeze.)
