It /is/ a nice idea.  I've used it for a number of things (not 
necessarily pan related) myself.  Any time there's an "impedance 
mismatch" between what's expected by one app, and what another can spit 
out.  It's especially useful when uses the command line and the other 
uses STDIN/STDOUT (so pipes). =8^)
