Just for future reference, should you ever need to investigate problems
like this:

You can telnet to your news server on port 119 and issue some standard
commands to see what the server is actually sending back.  For example:

telnet newsserver.foo.com 119

If you need to login:

authinfo user foo
authinfo pass bar

mode reader
group foobar

Try "help" for a list of other commands the server will recognize
