I'm not sure why -- it does when using ctrl-N/P. I would also like
to map leftarrow/rightarrow to collapse/expand thread, but I see no
way to do this.
Just using the arrow? That shouldn't load the message, as arrow keys
are used for navigation without selection/load. (The ctrl/shift
modifiers then allow traditional multi-select.)
All right. "Working as designed" isn't what I wanted to hear, but I
thought it might be the case. :-) I'll just use different keys.

Is there a way to assign keys to expand/collapse the current thread? I
don't see the option and, now that I look, don't see it in the menus
either.

I usually set my newsreader to cache all new messages. In Pan, if I
set preferences->actions->cache articles scoring at.... to [only
new], it does cache articles as I enter each group, but it also
marks them all read, which is not what I want. Not sure what's
going on there.
That would be a bug in the still relatively new actions feature. I'm
actually not sure if it's fixed in the latest 0.139 or not. Thanks
very much for the report as that feature is new enough to need a bit
of extra testing, and reporting when things don't work as expected.
If it's not fixed in the current release, I'd be willing to try my hand
at it if someone can point me in the right direction to contribute.

That's the standard behaviour, but it could be changed. All it needs is an extra flag on the action, as a bool.
I'll add it today or tomorrow.
Considering the collapse/expand shortkey. Yes, there's no action for that. I'm implementing that as I speak.

Cheers.
