[Phpgroupware-users] Asterisks

This may well be a subject that has been covered before, but after some
fairly extensive searching, I still haven't found an answer.
What exactly causes all the asterisks?
I know that they only occur on information coming from the database, but
that's about the only parallel I can find.
Just in case you have no idea what I'm talking about, the registration
app, for example, displays it's field names as such:

Password
Re-enter password*
Birthday
E-Mail
First name
Last name
Address*
City*
State*
ZIP/Postal*
Country*
Phone*
Gender*

These asterisks show up a variety of other places too.  I am running
0.9.14-rc3, but I have seen this behavior in the earlier releases I have
worked with as well.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks
in advance.
