The main issue I see after applying your patch is that changes to
the dictionary are not reflected by the GUI datasheet until I do
something that completely refreshes the view, such as checking or
unchecking the Value Labels selection on the View menu. This is
what happen if I, e.g., run COMPUTE newvar=someexistingvar. Is
that the problem that you mention (same thing happens with NEW
FILE), or is there something else you had in mind?
