Details:

In trying to do a full backup of a Windows Vista volume to a remote Linux
volume, I discovered that Vista uses an NTFS facility which they call reparse
points -- which are really links. These are used quite a lot -- unbeknownst
to the unwary user -- for instance the "documents and settings" item in the \
folder of the hard drive is actually junction to the users directory -- and
there are many other places. This could duplicate data upon a restore and
cause major problems otherwise.
