Hey Steve,
You might try using StarOffice <http://www.sun.com/staroffice/>
I'm using it in place of all the MSOffice products.  There are
some problems reading Word files.  But, it will be better than
many things out there.  And it's free (though some among us
wouldn't call it "freeware" [grin]).
