If you "take a position", it is risky because the value of the stock can change out from under you, and it can become less valuable (a bad position), but it can also be good because its price (your value) can go up. A `dividend' is the value that a company pays you for buying in to their company above and beyond the sellable value of the stock at a given time; an incentive to weather (what they hope are temporary) decreases in the value of the company.
