Maybe we ought to back off a little and understand this more fully.

Looking over the 4.2.7 sources, I see that -lXt is in the LIBS, and 
4.2.7 works.

Perhaps order matters.  Here's the LIBS line in my 4.2.7 makefile:
LIBS =  -lXaw3d  -lXmu  -lXt -lXext \
   -lXpm  -lSM -lICE -lX11   -lm
