[Fhsst-authors] maths syllabus

hi there,

well, 20K of LaTeX and 3 days later... i have finished making a more
understandable version of the SA outcomes based syllabus for mathematics... its
currently in maths/outcomes.tex

i made a PDF file (other/maths-syllabus.pdf) which contains the new layout with
the actual syllabus notes in each relevant section. i HIGHLY recommend all maths
authors to read this file when working on their sections. you may find that you
have left essential material out, or that you have written too much!! do not
worry either way. we obviously aim to meet the syllabus, but extra content is
welcome. we may however have to decide that non-syllabus material be commented
out.

like i said, i intend to make this the main maths file, pulling content from the
other files into it, and then breaking it up into smaller files, removing the
old ones. you do not need to worry about this... i will do this myself and then
one day you will just get an email saying "file X has been deleted, your work is
now in file Y", and you can pick up where you left off :-)

the breakdown of maths will now be like this:

# generated by typing
$ sed -e 's|\\chapter{|-> |' -e 's|\\section{|   --> |' \
    outcomes.tex | grep '\->' | sed 's|}||'

-> Types of Numbers
   --> Rational Numbers
   --> Exponents
   --> Surds
   --> Accuracy
-> Patterns in Numbers
   --> Sequences
   --> Series
   --> Finance
-> Manipulating and Representing Data
   --> Functions
   --> Graphs
   --> Algebra of the Real Numbers
   --> The Exponential and Logarithms
-> Numerics
   --> Optimisation
   --> Gradient
-> Differentiation

   --> Function Fitting
   --> Probability
   --> Permutations and Tree Diagrams

which does not seem to have any major dependency problems. the main dependency
problem before was that "solving trig equations" comes before the trig section
in the syllabus. but that was easily fixed by just moving the solving equations
chapter to near the end... which i think is nice. theory first application
after... just like the karate kid.

cheers,
Sam
