I'm not a Debian user, and I don't know how the 64-bit libs are handled there,
but for other distros, as openSuse, there are already packages of
FluidSynth-1.0.9 from Packman for the x86_64 architecture, made out of the
box from the released source tarball, without requiring any patch or special
packaging handling:
