While in theory something might be able to be done with Java, since
there are few, if any, java applets being used that generate only 
ASCII it seems like it wouldn't a lot of help.

If I were to dream about a future lynx enhancement (and no, I don't have
the time nor talent to write it) I wish that on pages which had some use
of scripts, lynx would present a 'frame' like list of the scripts, with
the option of invoking some application (based perhaps on mailcap or
something similar).  Then one could invoke appletviewer, or a perl/tcl/vbscript
whatever interpreter.

Someone on a telnet or other ASCII terminal, one just wouldn't activate
the appropriate link.
