Dunno. Does it happen with all http URLs or only some?
Does it happen for local file URLs? FTP URLs?
What flags did you give to ./configure?
Try
lynx -trace -tlog -dump [your URL]
and note the last lines before the 'Fatal error' occurs.
(You may want to capture stderr.)
