The version 2 he's referring to does link to some graphics libraries,
but they don't automatically come into play (I haven't spent the time
to see why - noting that it wasn't a release version):

/usr/local/bin/links:
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4001c000)
        libgpm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgpm.so.1 (0x40020000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40026000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
        libncurses.so.5 => /usr/local/lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x40110000)
/usr/local/bin/links2:
        libtiff.so.3 => /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 (0x40014000)
        libjpeg.so.62 => /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62 (0x40041000)
        libpng.so.2 => /usr/lib/libpng.so.2 (0x40060000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4008f000)
        libgpm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgpm.so.1 (0x40092000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x40098000)
        libvga.so.1 => /usr/lib/libvga.so.1 (0x400b4000)
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x400fc000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x401b2000)
        libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x4029c000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
        libncurses.so.5 => /usr/local/lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x402ab000)

(I should add a comment about the misleading use of ncurses but haven't
found a suitable place for it ;-)

That's my impression. Though depending on the site, the same versions of
w3m and links will be treated differently - some sites decide that one or
the other of those are not capable of handling frames.
