Mm, yep, that could explain your invariant failure :-).  monotone
considers _MTN/work to be internal data, there isn't any slick error
reporting UI bolted on to it, just the internal sanity checks.

Try "mtn revert <accidentally added file>" to handle this sort of
situation.
