The blank spaces are a result of TeX's typesetting process having problems 
when the ratio between size occupied by images and amount of text on a page is 
bad (i.e. a lot of non-tiny images).

Here, the generated PDF looks better, after I scaled down one image a bit,
see b507bcb3..
