freebsd 4.5 has strace right?  or is it ktrace?

anyhow, try backing up the socket on its own and doing strace or ktrace on
your rdiff-backups -- you might get more clues from the actual sequence of
operations rdiff-backup is trying to perform.  you might need to make a
shell script named rdiff-backup which wraps the real rdiff-backup in an
strace.

are there any magic mount options on your /home/backup filesystem which
would prevent sockets?  (i use mount options
nosuid,nodev,noatime,nodiratime on linux)
