I think all this talks about iso images, and filesystems are moving us away
from our point.
It is very important that these filesystems was designed to be on top of
block device, to be of constant size (and only later toolchain was extended
to allow them to grow).
My opinion, that for us to satisfy the requirements we should use archive
format close to zip, or, more closer, to 7z (www.7-zip.com). With proper
naming convention we can store EAs and metadata in special files, which will
be semirandomly accessible by means of archive directory lookup.
