Nevermind.  It was because the font server was only including the unscaled
fonts.  The fonts in my config file are:

catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
#            /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1,
            /usr/share/fonts,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,
            /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,

The commented-out one is a subset of the next one.

I hit this several times before, it's just been a while since the last
time (I did a install rather than an upgrade of the OS).

Now to try 0.7...
